Despite shortcomings in the education system, the outstanding service rendered by teachers and principals remains a source of pride for the country, Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.
She made these remarks while addressing the Guru Pratibha Prabha – 2025 Teacher and Principal Appreciation Ceremony, held in line with World Teachers’ Day, which falls on October 5.
Dr. Amarasuriya noted that teachers, who share the responsibility of parents, play a crucial role in producing knowledgeable, virtuous, and wise citizens for society. She stressed that teachers and principals deserve the highest respect and gratitude for their dedication.
Outlining future plans, the Minister announced that the government will introduce a new program to strengthen the education system, balance the curriculum, enhance teacher training, digitize schools, and improve infrastructure facilities.
The ceremony, held under the theme “Recognizing Teaching as a Collective Profession with a New Meaning,” aimed to honor the dedication and commitment of educators in shaping the country’s future generations.
This year’s evaluation recognized best practices implemented at school level to overcome challenges in 2024. Teachers and principals were assessed in three categories, based on school size and their performance in official duties. Following a national-level evaluation, 173 teachers and principals were selected for recognition.
Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Secretary of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa, Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Liyanage, Additional Secretary of Educational Quality Development Dulani Samarakoon, and other senior officials also participated in the event.
