Sri Lanka secured its first-ever medal at the 13th World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India, as Nuwan Indika Gamage claimed the bronze in the Men’s Long Jump T44 event yesterday (2).

Competing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Gamage produced a leap of 6.46 metres, marking his seasonal best performance. His achievement came against a strong field of world-class athletes, including several Olympic and World Championship medalists.

Guided by his coach Y.K. Kularatna, Gamage expressed his pride in bringing glory to the nation, calling the medal a “superb accomplishment” for Sri Lanka on the global athletics stage.

This historic bronze marks a milestone for the country in para sports, boosting hopes for greater success at future international competitions.
