The Department of Probation and Child Care Services announced that a special programme has been launched to mark World Children’s Day, with the aim of improving the wellbeing of children in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a press briefing held yesterday (01) at the Health Ministry’s Health Promotion Bureau, the Department’s Assistant Commissioner (Administration), P.N.D. Perera, revealed that over 9,000 children are currently under probation.
She noted that many children are placed under probation due to various life circumstances, often temporarily. The new programme, she explained, also focuses on identifying children living in unsafe environments or on the streets, with the intervention of the Police. Such children will either be referred to probation services or provided with alternative care and support.
Mr.Perera further stated that the highest number of children under probation services is recorded in the Western Province.
