The dispute reportedly began after an employee applied for a personal loan. Sources say Deputy Chairman Kumara, of the Independent Group, allegedly demanded that Municipal Council Accountant Nuwan Ude Kumara release the funds immediately. The accountant subsequently filed a complaint with the Weligama Police.
During the protest, the accountant and other council staff remained at the entrance of the municipal building, calling for a fair resolution and urging that political figures refrain from interfering in official duties.
Mayor Afraz Mohamed, representing the National People’s Power, was attending a special programme in Galle when he was informed of the incident. He returned to the council, held discussions with the staff, and took steps to resolve the situation.
