A former Borella police officer was sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Homagama High Court yesterday for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl in 2009.
The offence, punishable under Section 365B(2)(b) of the Penal Code, involved the accused using part of his body to sexually touch the child.
High Court Judge Navaratna Marasinghe said the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt. State Counsel Shaini Weerasuriya noted that the accused had gravely misused his position, betraying both the child and public trust.
The Judge emphasized that the crime was of an extremely grave nature, particularly because it was committed by a police officer.
In addition to the 14-year sentence, the Court imposed a Rs. 25,000 fine and ordered Rs. 400,000 in compensation to the victim.
