The Department of National Zoological Gardens has announced that children under the age of 12 will be granted free admission to zoos across the country on World Children’s Day.
Director General of the Department, Dr. Chandana Rajapaksha, said the initiative is part of a series of programs organized in line with this year’s theme, “Protect with Love, Win the World.”
Accordingly, children will be given free entry to the Dehiwala National Zoo, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Pinnawala Zoo, and Ridiyagama Safari Park.
The Department also confirmed that special events will be held at all zoological institutions under its purview to celebrate World Children’s Day.
The main ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Dehiwala Zoo under the patronage of Environment Minister Dhammika Pathabendige, with the participation of State Minister Anton Jayakody and Ministry Secretary K.A. Uduwawala. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m.
A variety of engaging activities have been planned throughout the day, including children’s art, essay, singing, dancing, and face-painting competitions.
Organizers highlighted that the program aims not only to provide entertainment but also to impart knowledge. Children will be educated on wildlife behavior, breeding methods, and conservation practices, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting wild animals.
