The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a suspect linked to a massive ‘Urumaya’ deed certificate scam that defrauded hundreds of victims in the Eastern Province.
Police said the suspect aided the main perpetrator in a scheme that promised ‘Urumaya’ certificates in exchange for payments of Rs. 400,000–500,000 per person. Investigations revealed that 164 people from Kalmunai had been swindled.
The suspect, a resident of Maharagama, had more than Rs. 15 million deposited into his bank account through the fraudulent operation, police added. It was also revealed that about 50 victims were taken to the Sirikotha headquarters during the last presidential election.
The main suspect, a woman from Matale, was arrested earlier and is accused of masterminding the scam, misappropriating an estimated Rs. 84 million.
The arrested suspect is to be produced in court.
