The Ministry of Defence has launched special island-wide operations to curb the production and use of banned explosives known as “Hakka Patas” and “Cheena Patas.”
Authorities said “Cheena Patas” are being illegally manufactured using raw materials intended for the fireworks industry, while “Hakka Patas” are produced using these explosives. Farmers widely use them to chase wild animals from fields, but officials warned they have caused multiple deaths and serious injuries to both people and wildlife, in addition to posing environmental risks.
Despite being prohibited, reports indicate that the production, distribution, storage, and sale of these explosives continue across the country. The Defence Ministry has instructed police and other agencies to strictly enforce the law and take action against offenders.
The Ministry also said licensed firecracker and fireworks manufacturers found aiding such illegal practices will have their permits revoked. It urged the public to avoid using the explosives and to report any related activity to police or wildlife authorities.
