World Bank Country Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Gevorg Sargsyan, met with the General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Tilvin Silva) at the party’s headquarters in Pelawatte, Battaramulla.
During the discussion, Mr. Sargsyan expressed his appreciation for the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to restoring economic stability in the country. He highlighted the importance of combating corruption and explained how addressing such issues has a direct impact on economic development.
Providing a brief overview of the World Bank’s role, Mr. Sargsyan affirmed that the institution is prepared to extend support to any sector requested by the Sri Lankan government in order to advance the nation’s development.
Talks also covered the challenges Sri Lanka faces, including financial concerns, the significance of strengthening state institutions, and the vital role of engaging the private sector in the recovery process. Both parties also discussed the responsibilities undertaken on behalf of the people, with Mr. Sargsyan noting his particular appreciation for Sri Lanka’s determination to move forward from its past difficulties.
The meeting further touched on Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to build a new political culture, end corruption, and strengthen poverty reduction programs such as the “Aswesuma” (Social Safety Net) initiative.
In addition, ongoing World Bank-supported projects across various ministries, including digital development programs, were also discussed during the meeting.
