Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court today (26) rejected a request made by the complainant to name trade union leaders Wasantha Samarasinghe, Mahinda Jayasinghe, and Ranjan Jayalal as suspects and to produce them before court.
Delivering the order, Magistrate Pasan Amarasinghe observed that investigations into the disputed property are still being conducted by the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau. He noted that the case has already been referred to the Attorney General for instructions.
The Magistrate further emphasised that no arrest order has been issued against the three individuals and that they have not been named as suspects in the case at this stage. He clarified that during an ongoing investigation, the magistrate’s role does not extend to halting or overriding the process of seeking the Attorney General’s advice.
The order also stated that investigators are entitled to obtain directions from the Attorney General when there is no conclusive suspicion of a criminal offence in relation to the disputed property.
Accordingly, the court rejected the complainant’s plea to instruct police to name the three individuals as suspects and to produce them before court.
The case has been scheduled to be called again on 27 February.
