The Government of Sri Lanka and the European Union (EU) have signed a €8 million grant agreement to launch a new initiative aimed at supporting sustainable economic recovery through enhanced biodiversity conservation and solid waste management.

The agreement was officially signed today (23rd September) by Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, and Carmen Moreno, Ambassador of the European Union to Sri Lanka.

Jointly developed by the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government (lead ministry), the Ministry of Environment, and the EU, the project will focus on restoring degraded ecosystems, implementing conservation strategies, and promoting sustainable land-use practices. It will also address the urgent need for effective solid waste management systems, contributing to both environmental protection and improved public health.

“This project supports Sri Lankan policies that aim to reconnect with the world through sustainability,” said Ambassador Moreno. “By improving biodiversity protection and waste management, we are contributing to global health and climate action.”

The initiative aligns with the Government’s national policy statement, *"A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life"*, which highlights the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.

Dr. Suriyapperuma expressed appreciation to the EU for its continued support, emphasizing the project’s role in achieving Sri Lanka’s sustainable development goals and building a resilient, eco-friendly economy.
