The Department of Meteorology’s Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an advisory warning of strong winds and rough seas, effective for 24 hours from 9.30 a.m. today (23).

According to the advisory, winds in the sea areas extending from Galle to Matara and Hambantota up to Pottuvil may reach speeds of 55–60 kmph at times, making these seas rough to very rough.

Similarly, the seas off the coast from Puttalam to Mannar up to Kankesanthurai may also experience wind speeds of around 50–60 kmph, leading to rough conditions.

The Met Department further warned that in the sea areas from Negombo to Galle, Matara, and Hambantota up to Pottuvil, wave heights could rise to 2.5–3.0 meters. This could result in occasional surges of waves onto coastal areas.

Fishermen and those engaged in naval and coastal activities have been urged to exercise extreme caution.
