The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has revealed that a total of 6,512 cybercrime-related complaints were reported during the first seven months of this year, mainly linked to social media platforms.
According to CERT Senior Engineer Charuka Damunupola, out of the total complaints, 1,198 cases were connected to financial fraud, making it one of the most prevalent cyber threats currently faced by the public.
Other reported incidents include the creation of fake Facebook accounts, online sexual harassment, defamation, and the hacking of WhatsApp accounts.
Mr. Damunupola urged the public to remain vigilant while engaging online and to promptly report suspicious activities to CERT in order to ensure timely action and prevent further harm.
Authorities also stressed the importance of strengthening digital literacy and adopting safe online practices to minimize the risk of falling victim to cybercrimes.
