The Puttalam District, which produces nearly 60 percent of Sri Lanka’s salt, has begun its annual harvesting season, with producers recording bumper yields this year.

Sri Lanka requires about 180,000 metric tons of salt each year for consumption and industrial use. Harvesting, which takes place over seven months, has been strengthened this year by exceptionally dry weather.

Producers say the favourable conditions could allow Puttalam to supply the majority of the country’s requirement, marking the district’s largest-ever contribution to the national salt industry.
