The Department of Meteorology announces that prevailing showery and windy conditions over the southwestern parts of the country are expected to continue today (21).
Accordingly, showers will occur at times in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm is likely in some areas. Several spells of showers may also occur in Northern and North-western provinces.
In addition, showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. The Department further warns of fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in Central, North-central, and North-western provinces as well as Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Around the Island
Showers are likely at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle.
Winds will be south-westerly with speeds of 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 50–55 kmph at times in the sea areas from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The Department of Meteorology warns that these sea areas may turn rough at times, and advises naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant.
