Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed his condolences following the passing of young cricketer Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga Wellalage, describing him as a proud parent who nurtured a son admired by the entire nation.

In a heartfelt message, Jayasuriya said the late Suranga Wellalage, a cricketer himself, instilled in his son a deep love and respect for the game. “Your father was a cricketer himself and he can be proud of the son he raised. His love for the game lives on through you. I know how strong you are, and I have no doubt you will continue to make him proud by winning many games for Sri Lanka,” Jayasuriya said.

The head coach assured Dunith of his personal support during this difficult time. “Please remember you are not alone. I will be there for you like a father — guiding you, standing with you, and supporting you every step of the way. The entire team, the nation, and everyone who loves this sport are by your side,” he added.

Jayasuriya further noted that the tragedy highlights the way Sri Lankans embrace cricket as a family, uniting in both moments of joy and grief.
