The Bank of Ceylon (BOC) yesterday announced the launch of Sri Lanka’s first-ever biodegradable banking card, marking a significant step towards sustainable banking practices.

The new card is manufactured using non-edible, corn-based polylactic acid (PLA) derived from renewable sources. Unlike traditional PVC-based plastic cards that often end up in landfills and take centuries to decompose, this innovative card is industrially compostable, offering an environmentally responsible alternative for customers.

BOC officials noted that the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with global trends in green finance. They added that the biodegradable card combines eco-friendly material with the same durability and security features as conventional cards.

With this launch, BOC has set a new benchmark in the local banking industry by introducing sustainable innovations to reduce plastic waste and promote eco-conscious consumer choices.
