The cricketing fraternity has expressed heartfelt condolences over the sudden death of Suranga Wellalage, father of young Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage, who is currently representing Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup tournament.

Suranga Wellalage, aged 54 and himself a former cricketer, passed away yesterday (18) due to a sudden heart attack while Dunith was on national duty in the match against Afghanistan.

Former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi, who starred with a counter-attacking innings in the same game, shared a picture of Dunith and his late father on his official X account. “My heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the death of his beloved father. Stay strong brother,” Nabi wrote.

Bangladesh T20 captain Liton Das also posted a tribute on Facebook, expressing his prayers for strength and comfort to Dunith’s family:

“Extremely saddened to hear of the passing of your father Suranga Wellalage at the age of 54. May God grant him eternal peace and give strength to Dunith’s family at this difficult time.”

Bangladesh players Taskin Ahmed and Towhid Hridoy were among several others who joined in offering their sympathies.
