Heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely in some areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast for today (18), warning of showers or thundershowers in several parts of the island.

According to the forecast, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and Northwestern provinces, as well as Galle and Matara districts, will experience showers or thundershowers at times. Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely in some areas of these provinces.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in several other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m. The Met Department urges the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damages from temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Areas

In the 24-hour marine forecast (issued at 5.30 a.m. today), the Department stated that:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Showers or thundershowers may also develop in other sea areas, particularly during the evening or night.

Winds:

Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph.

Wind speeds could increase up to 50–55 kmph at times in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, and up to 50 kmph in sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

Sea Conditions:

Seas off the coast from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota may turn rough at times.

Seas off the coast from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar may be fairly rough at times.

The public, fishermen, and naval communities are strongly advised to remain cautious.
