Walasmulla Magistrate Malsha Kodithuwakku today (17) granted permission to detain businessman Sampath Manamperi, who surrendered to court this afternoon while being sought for arrest, for a period of seven days in the custody of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for questioning.
Manamperi was wanted in connection with the discovery of two concealed containers in Middeniya, suspected to contain chemical substances used in the production of crystal methamphetamine (“Ice”).
Earlier, his lawyer informed the Court of Appeal that Manamperi intended to surrender before the Magistrate’s Court. Taking this into account, the Court of Appeal directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure his safety following the surrender and instructed that the investigating officers be duly informed.
The order for detention was issued after Manamperi appeared before the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.
