The three-judge bench of the Colombo High Court today (16) ordered the release on bail of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several others accused of misappropriating government funds through the purchase of substandard antibody vaccines during the previous administration.

Each of the accused was granted bail under strict conditions, including a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bonds of Rs. 5 million each. The court also imposed a travel ban and ordered the surrender of their passports.

The Attorney General had indicted the accused before the High Court earlier in the day. During proceedings, Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama strongly opposed granting bail. However, defense counsel made extensive submissions urging the court to release the defendants.

After considering arguments from both sides, the bench comprising Justices Mahesh Weeraman, Pradeep Abeyratne, and Amali Ranaweera ruled in favor of the defense and rejected the Attorney General’s request to deny bail.
