Minister of Power and Energy, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, confirmed today (16) that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will not undergo privatization under the government’s restructuring program.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, the Minister explained that the government’s focus is on transforming the CEB into an efficient and productive state entity, without handing it over to private ownership.

His statement comes as CEB trade unions intensified their protest against the proposed restructuring. The unions have launched the second phase of their "work-to-rule" campaign from today, following the completion of the first stage.

Meanwhile, Minister Kumara Jayakody, addressing the media yesterday (15), revealed that nearly 12,000 employees could have been at risk of losing their jobs had amendments to the Electricity Act not been introduced.

Despite ongoing union action, the government reiterated its stance that restructuring efforts aim solely at improving efficiency, with no plans for privatization.
