Sri Lanka Launches First-Ever School Disaster Risk Index

Sri Lanka has introduced its first School Disaster Risk Index, aimed at ensuring safer environments for students and teachers in educational institutions.

The initiative, jointly developed by the Disaster Management Centre and the Ministry of Education, highlights the importance of reducing disaster risks within schools.

The index, which will be implemented across all government schools islandwide, is designed to enhance preparedness against natural disasters such as floods, droughts, landslides, tsunamis, severe winds, lightning, and storms.

The official launch ceremony took place in Colombo under the patronage of Disaster Management Centre Director General, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda.
