The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has announced a complete ban on the import, possession, and sale of four ornamental fish species identified as harmful to Sri Lanka’s freshwater ecosystems. The species banned under the new directive are Knifefish, Redline Snakehead, Alligator Gar, and Piranha.

Director Susanta Kahawatta explained that the decision was made due to the significant environmental risks these species pose. He noted that all four types are highly invasive and, if released into natural water bodies, could rapidly establish populations, displace native species, and disrupt the ecological balance.

These fish are also predatory and aggressive, feeding on smaller fish, amphibians, and even birds, which could lead to the decline or extinction of native aquatic species. The Department has urged both the public and aquarium traders to adhere strictly to the ban, stressing that safeguarding native biodiversity is vital for the long-term sustainability of the country’s freshwater resources.
