Renovate of Pettah Central Bus Stand to be Launched Today Under President Dissanayake

This is the first large-scale development of the Pettah bus stand in nearly 60 years. The facility, originally established in 1964 by the Sri Lanka Transport Board, functions as one of the country’s busiest inter-provincial and city bus terminals. Each day, between 1,500 and 2,000 bus trips are operated through the terminal, providing transport services to nearly one million passengers across the island.
However, decades without proper upgrades have left the bus stand in a state of disrepair. Access roads, bus parking areas, passenger waiting zones, driver and conductor restrooms, administrative buildings, sanitation, and drainage systems have deteriorated significantly, causing severe inconvenience for the traveling public.
Recognizing this urgent need, the government has launched a comprehensive modernization plan under the Clean Sri Lanka Program, allocating Rs. 424 million for the project. Engineering support for the initiative is being provided by the Sri Lanka Air Force, while the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, the Sri Lanka Transport Board, and several other institutions are extending their contributions.
The renovation will include the construction of new rest areas, information and communication centers, upgraded security systems, and a range of modern facilities designed to transform the Pettah Central Bus Stand into a more efficient and passenger-friendly transport hub.
