A Chief Security Officer of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was arrested this morning (14) by Customs officers while attempting to smuggle out a stock of gold biscuits worth over Rs. 210 million, hidden in his feet.
The suspect, a 54-year-old resident of Kandawala, Negombo, is also serving as the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Security Services Organization. He was apprehended at around 6.50 a.m. while leaving the airport through a special exit point.
Customs officers said the suspect had concealed 51 gold biscuits weighing 5.941 kilograms by wrapping them in special bandages and covering them with socks.
Officials suspect that the gold stock may have been handed over to him by another party to be smuggled out of the airport, and that he may have been involved in similar operations for some time.
The Katunayake Airport Customs has detained the suspect and further investigations are underway.
