Several judges accused of misconduct are expected to tender their resignations from the Judicial Service ahead of possible suspensions, according to legal sources.
The move comes as the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) intensifies investigations into complaints against members of the Judiciary. In recent months, multiple Magistrates, District Court Judges, and Additional District Court Judges have been interdicted, while just last week, a High Court judge was also placed under interdiction.
Concerns have grown within judicial circles that officers placed under interdiction may face serious challenges if they attempt to return to the legal profession. The Matugama Magistrate’s recent resignation, following allegations of misconduct, has further highlighted the issue.
The JSC, chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, is spearheading these probes, with Supreme Court Judge Mahinda Samayawardena serving as a member. Justice S. Thurairajah was recently appointed to the Commission, replacing retired Supreme Court Judge Gamini Amarasekara. High Court Judge Prasanna Alwis functions as Secretary.
