Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Navin Suriyaarachchi, passed away yesterday (12) afternoon following a brief illness.

Mr. Suriyaarachchi, who had previously served as a consultant in the Capital Markets Department of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group, and as a Director of SANASA Development Bank, volunteered his service as Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority under the new government without drawing a salary.

During his tenure, he played a crucial role in curbing malpractice and corruption within the gem and jewellery industry, while taking significant steps to modernize the sector. He was instrumental in formulating new regulations to replace outdated ones and in introducing reforms to strengthen the industry’s legal framework.

Among his notable contributions was the establishment of a VAT refund counter for foreign visitors at the airport, aimed at promoting gem and jewellery trade with international buyers.

His remains have been placed at Jayaratne Funeral Parlour from 9.30 a.m. today (13) for relatives and well-wishers to pay their last respects. The final rites will be held this afternoon (13) at the Borella Cemetery.
