The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (12) informed the Court of Appeal that no decision has yet been taken regarding the arrest of former Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila over a recent statement he made to the media.

Deputy Solicitor General Sudarshana de Silva, appearing for the CID, made the submission when a writ petition filed by Gammanpila, who is currently in Thailand, was taken up before the Court of Appeal.

In his petition, Gammanpila stated that on August 27, 2025, several media reports indicated that the CID had informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court of an ongoing investigation to determine whether his remarks constituted an offence under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No. 56 of 2007, as well as Section 120 of the Penal Code.
