Sri Lanka has made a notable improvement in the 2025 Global Democracy Rankings, advancing 15 places compared to last year.
According to the latest report by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), this progress reflects significant gains under the country’s new administration, particularly in areas such as freedom of expression, media independence, and other key democratic indicators.
However, the global trend remains concerning. The report highlights that democracy worldwide has been in continuous decline, with 94 countries—more than half of those assessed—showing regression in at least one major democratic indicator between 2019 and 2024.
“The current state of democracy in the world is a cause for concern,” said IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora.
