Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph, the first Parish Priest of Eldeniya Parish, passed away this morning. He was a respected religious leader who dedicated his life to faith, service, and uplifting the Catholic community in Sri Lanka.

Fr. Benedict was ordained a priest on December 19, 1970, by the late Thomas Cardinal Cooray at St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena. Over the decades, he carried out his pastoral mission with deep devotion and also became a well-known figure in the country’s media landscape.

His contributions extended beyond the church, as he served as a prominent personality in television, radio, cinema, and print media, touching countless lives with his voice, presence, and message.

As the inaugural parish priest of Eldeniya, Fr. Benedict left behind a lasting legacy of spiritual guidance, compassion, and service to the faithful. His passing marks the end of an era for the parish and the broader Catholic community in Sri Lanka.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
