Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced that the government has initiated a common program to strengthen transport safety and protect the public.

Speaking at a special media briefing on short-term measures to prevent the increasing number of tragic road accidents, the Minister revealed that a full report on the recent Ella–Wellawaya bus accident is expected soon.

He further stated that new laws will be introduced to ensure that vehicles fitted with unauthorized additional parts will not be eligible to claim insurance compensation in the event of an accident.

Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasekara, along with officials representing the National Transport Commission, Department of Motor Traffic, Transport Board, Western Province Passenger Transport Authority, and the Police, also attended the media briefing.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Traffic Administration and Road Safety) Indika Hapugoda emphasized that strict legal measures will be taken to enforce these regulations, ensuring safer roads in the future.
