Former President Maithripala Sirisena has vacated his official residence on Hector Kobbekaduwa Mawatha, Colombo, following the enactment of the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill.
The move comes after Parliament passed the bill without amendments on Tuesday, effectively abolishing special privileges previously granted to former Presidents, their widows, and retired Members of Parliament.
Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne endorsed the bill shortly after its passage, officially signing it into law as the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Act, No. 18 of 2025.
The legislation marks a significant shift in policy, aiming to reduce state expenditure and remove long-standing benefits afforded to former political officeholders.
