Parliament today passed the Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill with an overwhelming majority.
During the second reading of the bill, 151 Members of Parliament voted in favor, while only one MP — New Democratic Front’s Chamara Sampath Dassanayake — voted against it. Accordingly, Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced that the bill was passed with a majority of 150 votes.
The bill was then taken up for the third reading (committee stage), where it was approved without any amendments.
With the passage of this bill, legal provisions relating to entitlements for former Presidents stand repealed.
