The Sri Lankan Police have issued a strong warning over the dangers posed by the release of sky lanterns during festive seasons and special celebrations.

In a statement, Police noted that many individuals release lanterns of varying sizes, which are lifted into the sky using an open flame. While they may appear harmless and entertaining, authorities cautioned that the devices pose a serious fire hazard, as they can drift unpredictably and fall to the ground while still burning.

Police warned that if such lanterns land on high-risk sites such as fireworks factories, fuel stations, petroleum storage facilities, residential homes, commercial buildings, or crowded public spaces, they could ignite destructive fires, causing extensive property damage and potentially claiming lives.

Highlighting the frequent release of sky lanterns at Galle Face Green in Colombo, Police said that a single lantern landing on an apartment complex or densely populated area could lead to catastrophic consequences.

Authorities have urged the public to act responsibly, stressing the importance of raising awareness about the risks. “By exercising caution, citizens can help prevent avoidable tragedies and safeguard both lives and property,” the statement said.
