The first parliamentary sitting week for September 2025 began today, following decisions made at the Committee on Parliamentary Business chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne on August 21, Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament Chaminda Kulatunga confirmed.
Parliament will convene from September 9 to 12, with today’s session commencing at 9.30 a.m. Business under Standing Orders 22(1) to 22(6) will be taken up first, followed by oral questions until 11.00 a.m., and further questions under Standing Order 27(2) until 11.30 a.m.
The main item on today’s agenda will be the motion seeking approval for the Agreement on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments signed between Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Debate on the motion is scheduled to continue until 5.00 p.m., after which a vote will be held.
In line with Article 157 of the Constitution, the agreement requires approval by a special majority of Parliament.
Parliament will then allocate time for additional questions until adjournment at 5.30 p.m.
