The fatal bus accident on the Ella-Wellawaya road was caused by the driver’s negligence, according to Traffic Division DIG Indika Hapugoda.
Speaking at a media briefing today (08), DIG Hapugoda said the incident occurred when the 25-year-old driver lost control of the bus, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a ravine.
The tragedy took place on the night of September 4 at the 24th pillar on the Ella-Wellawaya main road, when a bus carrying staff members of the Tangalle Municipal Council and their families was returning from a picnic. Fifteen people were killed, and 17 others sustained injuries.
Multiple agencies, including motor vehicle inspectors and a special police team under the DIGs of Badulla and Bandarawela, have launched investigations into the accident.
