The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory covering 16 districts of the island.
The advisory, released at 12:00 noon today (8) and valid until 11:00 p.m., warns of thunderstorms accompanied by strong lightning in several areas. Affected regions include the Central, North-Central, North-Western, Eastern, Uva, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Vavuniya and Mullaittivu districts.
The department further cautioned that temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to minimize risks associated with lightning strikes and adverse weather conditions.
