The Department of Meteorology says showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, as well as in Kurunegala and Hambantota districts after 1.00 p.m. today (08).

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75mm is likely at some locations. Meanwhile, a few showers are also expected in the Western Province and in Galle and Matara districts.

The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Sea Area Forecast

A few showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Matara via Galle, while showers or thundershowers are likely in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly in the sea areas off Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota, with speeds between 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50–55 kmph at times. In other areas, winds will be southwesterly or variable at speeds of 20–30 kmph.

The sea areas off Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota may turn rough at times, while the sea areas from Colombo to Galle may be fairly rough. The Met. Department further warns that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
