The Government Analyst’s Department’s lead investigator is scheduled to visit Ella tomorrow (8) to inspect the wreckage of the bus involved in the recent accident on the Ella–Wellawaya road, in order to determine whether a technical fault contributed to the crash.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the bus was travelling at over 70 km/h at the time of the incident. Police suspect brake failure as a possible cause for the excessive speed. A certificate of fitness indicating the bus was roadworthy was found on board, and authorities are probing the validity of the document.

The wreckage, currently held at Ella Police Station, is being examined by investigators. A motor vehicle inspector is also expected to participate in tomorrow’s inspection.

The accident occurred when the speeding bus struck the rear of a jeep travelling in its designated lane towards the mountain. Initially, the jeep driver was arrested for allegedly failing to prevent the crash, but further inquiries cleared him of wrongdoing.

According to the jeep driver, the bus sped past him before breaking through a safety barrier and plunging downhill. He immediately alerted police to the incident.

Police noted that the Ella–Wellawaya road meets international safety standards, with clear road signs and maximum safety measures implemented by the Road Development Authority.
