A total lunar eclipse will be visible in Sri Lanka and several other countries around the world today (7).
The phenomenon occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its darkest shadow over the Moon. As a result, the Moon will remain darkened for a duration of 1 hour and 22 minutes.
The eclipse will begin at 8:58 p.m. tonight (7) and last until 2:25 a.m. tomorrow (8).
Meanwhile, the University of Colombo has organized a special observation camp at its Sports Complex from 7:00 p.m. today, allowing the public to witness the rare celestial event.
According to Professor Chandana Jayaratne, Director of the Astronomy and Space Science Unit of the University of Colombo, this will be the last total lunar eclipse visible to Sri Lankans until 2028.
