In the past 12 hours, four separate shootings have been reported from various parts of the country, leaving one person dead and another injured.
According to police, these incidents have brought the total number of shootings recorded in 2025 to 96. So far this year, 50 people have been killed and 53 injured in such incidents.
The first shooting occurred at around 11.45 p.m. yesterday (5) in Grandpass, claiming the life of 27-year-old Heshan Salinda Pushpakumara. Investigations reveal that the victim had arrived at the location and carried out the shooting himself, and police confirmed he had no prior convictions.
Shortly after, around 1.40 a.m., a second shooting was reported in the Panchikawatte area of Maradana. Two suspects on a motorcycle opened fire, critically injuring 44-year-old Sendhil Mohan, a resident of Panchikawatte and close associate of local underworld figure Neville. Police suspect the shooting was carried out by a group linked to organized criminal ‘Keselwatte Kavi’. Mohan is currently in intensive care at the Colombo National Hospital.
The third incident took place in the Kuttiduwa area of Negombo around 1.30 a.m., when two suspects on a motorcycle fired a single shot from a 9mm firearm at a house before fleeing. No injuries were reported, and police believe the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute.
The fourth shooting occurred at around 9.45 a.m. today in the Sandagalawatta area of Alubomulla, targeting a woman shop owner. She escaped unharmed, and the motive for the attack is yet to be established.
Police investigations into all four incidents are ongoing.
