Former State Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, has been admitted to the prison hospital.
Prison Media Spokesperson Jagath Weerasinghe said that Rajapaksa was transferred to the prison hospital yesterday (5) afternoon on medical advice. He is reportedly suffering from health conditions including high blood pressure.
Rajapaksa was recently arrested by the Bribery Commission on charges of corruption, accused of unlawfully receiving Rs. 8.85 million as compensation for the destruction of his political office, which had been built on Mahaweli land, by activists.
The case, filed under the Anti-Corruption Act, was taken up on August 29, when the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered that he be further remanded until September 12.
