For the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Police, four female Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) simultaneously.

According to the recommendations of Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, the four officers have been promoted to the vacant female DIG posts based on a list approved by the National Police Commission. Their promotions take effect from 1 January 2025.

The officers are:

DIG Darshika Kumari – First female Commanding Officer of the Police Field Force Headquarters.

DIG Padmini Weerasuriya – First and only female officer in Sri Lanka to have been in charge of a district, currently serving as Acting DIG of Kalutara District, and the first female Director of Investigations at the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

DIG Renuka Jayasundara – Currently Acting DIG of the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children & Women.

DIG Nishani Seneviratne – Currently Acting DIG and Head of the Research and Information Division; longest-serving female officer in the State Intelligence Service.

All four were part of the first batch of female apprentice sub-inspectors recruited to the Sri Lanka Police in 1997, marking yet another milestone in the force’s history.
