The Cabinet has approved a proposal to introduce new circular instructions for the admission of students to grades other than Grades 5 and 6, in line with upcoming education reforms.

The move aims to maintain classroom sizes within approved limits while ensuring every child’s right to education. The new mechanism will prioritise applications from students who genuinely need to transfer to another school from their current institution due to various reasons.

The decision follows recommendations by a Sub-Committee appointed by the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.

The Cabinet granted approval to cancel all circulars pertaining to the admission of students from Grade 2 to Grade 11 in government schools, except Grades 5 and 6, and to issue new circulars.

The proposal was submitted by Prime Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
