The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is probing the violent attack on Galle Face protesters on May 9, 2022, has sought the Attorney General’s advice regarding future legal action against the suspects.
The case involves 37 individuals, including former parliamentarians Johnston Fernando and Milan Jayathilake, former Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, and several others.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana, the CID informed the Court that preliminary investigations have been completed and that investigation reports have been forwarded to the Attorney General. However, the CID noted that they have not yet received the AG’s advice.
In response, the Magistrate issued a directive urging the Attorney General to expedite the review of the investigation material.
Further magisterial inquiry has been scheduled for January 21, 2026.
