The Fort Magistrate's Court has ordered the release of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara from charges of criminal coercion and intimidation filed over an incident involving an elevator operator at Police Headquarters.

The case stemmed from a complaint lodged on June 2, 2019, by a police officer and resident of Ragama, who had been working as a lift operator at the time. According to the complaint, Jayasundara had allegedly used abusive language, grabbed the officer by the collar, and attempted to assault him inside an elevator on April 11, 2017.

Jayasundara was arrested and subsequently released in 2019 following the complaint. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted the investigation.

After reviewing the case, the Fort Magistrate ruled that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges and ordered Jayasundara to be released from the case.
