The Department of Meteorology has issued the weather forecast for today (02), warning of intermittent showers and fairly strong winds in several parts of the island.

Showers in Selected Areas
A few showers are likely in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
Showers or thundershowers may also develop at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong Winds
Fairly strong winds, reaching 30-40 kmph, are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and in the North-Central, North-Western provinces and Hambantota district.
Sun Directly Overhead
The Department further stated that the sun will be directly overhead across latitudes of Sri Lanka from August 28 to September 7 due to its apparent southward relative motion.
Today (02), the nearest places where the sun will be overhead around 12.10 noon include Andigama, Balalla, Migaswewa, Bambaragaswewa, Bakamuna, Aralaganwila, Chenkalady, and Eravur.
Forecast for Sea Areas (Next 24 Hours)
Condition of Rain: A few showers are expected in the sea areas off the coast from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds:
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly at 30-40 kmph.
Wind speeds may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speeds could rise to 45-50 kmph in the sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Mannar to Vakarai via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee.
State of the Sea:
The sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, will be rough at times.
The sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Mannar to Vakarai via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee, will be fairly rough at times.
Wave heights may rise between 2.5 to 3.0 meters in sea areas from Negombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara, and Hambantota.
