The case against 56 inmates accused of attempting to escape during the devastating tsunami on December 26, 2004, was taken up before Galle High Court Judge Purnima Paranagama.
The accused face multiple charges, including unlawful assembly, assaulting prison officials, attempting to escape from custody, and causing damage to prison property amounting to Rs. 153,961,325.
Police informed the court that nine of the suspects have since died, while six others are reported missing. Of the remaining 41 suspects, 25 appeared in court on bail.
During proceedings, High Court Judge Paranagama directed the State Counsel to explore the possibility of revising the charges under the Public Property Act, in consultation with the Attorney General.
Sergeant Ajith Pushpakumara testified for the prosecution during the hearing. The case is to be continued.
