A rare total lunar eclipse will be visible across Sri Lanka and much of the world on September 7, coinciding with Nikini Poya day, according to Prof. Chandana Jayaratne, Director of the Astronomy and Space Science Unit at the University of Colombo.
The eclipse will begin at 8:58 p.m. and continue until 2:25 a.m. the following day, spanning over five hours. The total phase, where the Moon is fully covered by Earth’s shadow, will last from 11:01 p.m. to 12:22 a.m.
Prof. Jayaratne explained that the Moon will pass through Earth’s darkest central shadow, turning dim for about 1 hour and 22 minutes. Around 85% of the global population will be able to view this phenomenon either fully or partially.
He added that this will be the last total lunar eclipse visible in Sri Lanka until 2028 and encouraged schools to arrange night-sky observation camps to make educational use of the rare event.
